Snow doesn’t cause accidents, stupid people do!
This is a headline that Christine the Curmudgeon saw on a Maine news website: Storm Dumps Snow, Causes Accidents.
The first snowstorm of the season dumped several inches of snow on Southern Maine Saturday night.
The wintry weather made for treacherous conditions on the roads. Police say vehicles were sliding off the roads all over the Greater Portland area and elsewhere, and speeds on the Maine Turnpike and I-95 were reduced to 45 miles per hour. Parking Bans were declared in Brunswick and Auburn.
Between three and six inches were expected to fall before the storm cleared out, making way for sunny weather on Sunday.
No. The snow did NOT cause any of these accidents. These accdidents were caused by idiots who were driving 90 miles an hour on slippery roads. I know, I see it all the time. Just because the state police ordered the speed limit to be reduced to 45 MPH, doesn’t mean people obey it. It’s 65 MPH most of the time, people don’t obey that, either.
I’m continually amazed by people who have lived in New England forever, but STILL don’t know how to drive properly in the snow. Sometimes, I wish the government would just round up all of these idiots and put them on a one-way bus to Florida, if they come baqck to New England, they go to jail. But that wouldn’t be fair to the fine citizens of Florida, no doubt that these people would find new ways to be annoying.
While I’m on the subject of snow and the news media, WHY IS ANY OF THIS NEWS? It is DECEMBER. This is NEW ENGLAND. Snow is a normal occurrence this time of year. Yet every year, without fail, most news stations will have “team coverage”, where most of their reporters are assigned to stansd alongside some highway or another, smile at the camera, and say, “LOOK! IT’S SNOWING!”
And let’s not forget the obligatory reporter in Home Depot, talking to people who are buying ice melt and snow shovels. Why are there always so many people buying snow shovels, that it often causes a shortage? Are we the only people who re-use the same shovel year after year? If you buy a halfway decent one, it’ll last for years.
Anyhoo, I really hope this will melt by Tuesday. On that day, I need to walk a few blocks to the local school to vote in the primary for the special election to fill the late Senator Ted Kennedy’s seat. Many of my neighbors are not known for shoveling the sidewalks in front of their houses, even though it is supposedly required by law to do so. This crap town never seems to enforce it, though. This results in unshoveled snow starting to melt, then freezing over and making walking treacherous.
Lazy bums. It would do a lot of them good to pick up a shovel and use it, some of these people need to seriously lose weight, and snow shoveling is good exercise.
Winter in New England – let the stupidity begin!
